What is Zero Waste?

Zero Waste is known as an international project called “Zero Waste”. According to the internationally accepted definition; “Zero Waste” is the protection of all resources without burning and without any discharge to the soil, water or air that threatens the environment or human health, through responsible production, consumption, reuse and recycling of products, packaging and materials.

After the Zero Waste Project Introduction Meeting held in our country on September 26, 2017, the "Zero Waste Regulation" was published by the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization in the Official Gazette No.

With this regulation, general principles and principles regarding the establishment and monitoring of zero waste management system and issuance of zero waste certificates have been determined for local administrations (Municipalities, Special Provincial Administrations, etc.) and for the buildings and campuses defined in the Annex-1 list of the regulation.

What is Zero Waste Certificate?

Within the scope of the Zero Waste Regulation, the document given by the Ministry to the local administrations, the Buildings and Campuses defined in the Annex-1 list and those who set up the Zero Waste System on a voluntary basis is called the "Zero Waste Certificate".

Who are Obligated to Obtain a Zero Waste Certificate?

Local administrations (Metropolitan municipalities, metropolitan district municipalities, provincial, district and town municipalities, municipal unions and special provincial administrations) and buildings and campuses listed in Annex-1 are responsible for establishing the Zero Waste System and obtaining the zero waste certificate.

Buildings and campuses included in Annex-1 list;

  • Public Institutions and Organizations,
  • OIZs and Industrial Facilities,
  • Airports, Terminals, Ports,
  • Shopping Mall, Business Center and Commercial Plazas,
  • Educational Institutions and Dormitories,
  • Health Organizations,
  • Accommodation Facilities, Sites,
  • Fuel Stations and Recreation Facilities,
  • Chain Markets

How to Get Zero Waste Certificate?

After the zero waste system installation, an application is made through the Zero Waste Information System for the "Zero Waste Basic Level Certificate". Required documents and photos are uploaded through the system. The application is evaluated by the Provincial Directorate within thirty calendar days. If deemed necessary, an on-site inspection is carried out. A Basic Level Zero Waste Certificate is issued to places where it is determined that there is no lack of information and documents.

What is the Deadline for the Establishment of a Zero Waste Management System?

Deadline for the completion of the transitions to the Zero Waste Management System; vary according to both organizations and their capacities. In the "Zero Waste Regulation" Annex-1 list, 3 GROUPs for Local Administrations and 4 GROUPs for Buildings and Campuses are determined. According to the groups determined in this context, the deadlines required for the completion of the transitions to the system are given.
